Audio guide and raised drawings available in Summer Open Exhibition

As part of Babylon ARTS’ Inspired by Nature project, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we held it’s ‘Sensing Nature’ exhibition earlier this year, in which we worked closely with visually impaired individuals from Camsight and Vision Norfolk Following on from this, Babylon ARTS have been committed to making the gallery and exhibitions as accessible as possible to all visitors.

Therefore, this years Summer Open Exhibition 2024 includes an audio guide and a selection of raised drawings.

Raised drawings are translations of artworks into line drawings that are slightly raised from the page. They allow the visitor to feel their way around an image. For this exhibition, we have raised drawings of 6 artworks on display, which were translated by artist Kaitlin Ferguson. These include the following artworks:

  • Rebirth by Zoe Firth
  • Lode Swans by Valerie Sims
  • Running Free by Richard Savage
  • A Gap in the Market by David Podmore
  • Tulips by Cathy Noble
  • Cyclamen on Embroidered Fabric by Angela Cookney

Alongside this, an audio guide is available, which includes audio descriptions of 8 artworks on display. These audio descriptions were written by local young creatives Stan Gordon and Bear Stephenson, who have worked closely with Babylon ARTS on multiple projects over the past year. The audio guides were then recorded by Stan Gordon. These are available on headsets in the gallery, or can be listened to on Spotify.

The following artworks have been audiodescribed (scroll down to listen to the full audioguide):

  • Mercurial by Ben John
  • All Eyes on Me by Saber Danger
  • Pumpkin Field by Roz Howling
  • Arbor by June Massey
  • Big Mouth by Steven Anderson
  • Hevingham Swamp, Norfolk by Keith Judge
  • Out of this Earth by Marian Savill
  • One Rainy Wish by Emilia Symis
  • Signal 2 by Clare Barry
  • The Elderly Couple at Twilight by Rob Ellis

“We have benefited enormously from working collaboratively with those who are blind or with low vision and are committed to continuing to make the artworks in the gallery as accessible as possible to all our visitors,” says Liz Falconbridge, Project Coordinator.
